Mature Hair... Hair Loss or Breakage?

I’m 58, and my biggest concern is that my hair is thinning like crazy. Do you have a product you recommend to stop my hair from falling out?

 

   Mature hair loss/thinning is a more common thing for women then you would think. There are so many reasons a women’s hair could start falling out. The first thing you need to do is to figure out whether you are experiencing hair loss or breakage.

Hair loss in women can be brought on by various situations: diet, weight gain/loss, medications, illness, family history, and/or hormonal changes. In this case I would suggest you ask a doctor to help find the root cause. In the meantime, there are a few things you can do to help prevent further hair loss. Start off by taking daily vitamins containing Biotin (strengthen), Silica (add collagen), and fish oil (moisturize). Scalp massage is extremely beneficial. The stimulation enhances blood flow and boosts the follicle’s ability to grow hair.  You can also add a once a day topical treatment of 2%-5% Minoxidil which will help to reactivate hair follicles and regrow hair (*once you stop using the treatment you will revert back to your pre-existing amount of hair).

 

  If you are finding little hairs at the scalp your problem may actually be breakage.  As we mature and get grey our hair tends to get more fragile and brittle. The pigments that would normally create your hair color actually help to soften and reinforce the hair strand. Without them, they become course and hollow. Use products that help to hydrate and rebalance the scalp, which in turn will help strengthen the hair starting at the follicle. Some products are: Kerastase’s Age Premium line, Alterna’s Caviar (Anti-Aging), and L’Oreal Paris’ Everstrong. If you think you need something a little stronger, you can always start using Myoxin which will strengthen the existing hair making it appear fuller.

 

  As you can see there are so many underlying causes to this problem, you may need to try a few different things before you find what works for you.  Try not to get frustrated.  Just remember in most cases it takes about six months to notice the benefits.
